Sargent & Lundy Celebrates Global Day of the Engineer

Staff participated in a spirited catapult-building challenge and fund raiser benefiting Engineers Without Borders

April 12, 2018 - On April 4, Sargent & Lundy participated in DiscoverE’s third annual Global Day of the Engineer, a worldwide event that recognizes engineers. This one-day event unites engineering employers, educational institutions, governmental bodies, and engineering associations to join in celebrating engineers and the many ways they make a difference in our world.

The firm challenged staff from all disciplines to design and build catapults using nothing but standard No. 2 pencils and rubber bands. Whoever was able to launch a mini-box of Nerds candy the farthest using their catapult was the winner. Sargent & Lundy employees at the firm’s Baltimore, Maryland; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Trenton, New Jersey; and Wilmington, Delaware offices in addition to its Chicago headquarters participated in the event, which also served as a fundraiser benefiting Engineers Without Borders.

Many inventive creations were designed; some propelling objects several meters, several feet, or several inches – some even propelled backwards (unintentionally). The challenge was a fun way to celebrate engineers, show off technical and creative skills, and raise money for Engineers Without Borders.
