August 9, 2018 - Sargent & Lundy announced today that it has been named a Qualified BOLD® Consultant and has secured a licensing agreement with BOLD Transmission, LLC to offer this high-efficiency technology for overhead transmission line design. The patented Breakthrough Overhead Line Design® (BOLD®) technology features a compact structure that reduces structure heights as much as 30 percent along with electromagnetic field levels, maximizes use of right-of-ways and provides high-capacity performance.
The innovations of BOLD technology have been recognized with prestigious industry awards, including the 2017 Edison Award from the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the 2017 Utility Industry Innovation in Electricity Award from the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and the 2017 Grand Prize in the International Tower Design Competition from the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).

The BOLD technology provides an aesthetic structure that can deliver economical projects for new transmission and overcomes difficulties in rebuilding lines in existing right-of-ways, which often have space constraints that inhibit replacing aging lines with higher capacity transmission. BOLD is also an attractive solution for interconnection of wind, solar and other renewable generation facilities since the design’s inherent self-compensation removes the need for series compensation equipment.
The first deployment of BOLD technology was a rebuild project energized in 2016 that replaced a 1940s era 138-kV line with a double-circuit 138/345-kV BOLD line, providing five times the megawatts of the earlier line to flow in the same corridor.
BOLD is currently designed and tested for 138-kV, 161-kV, 230-kV and 345-kV applications. It can be built as a single- or double-circuit tower with flexibility in conductor and insulator selection.
