Cape May Substation Project Named a New Jersey Capital Construction Project of the Year

Sargent & Lundy served as engineer of choice for complete rebuild design

April 29, 2022 – Sargent & Lundy was honored with a Capital Construction Project of the Year award from the New Jersey Alliance for Action for its work on Atlantic City Electric’s Cape May substation project.

The Alliance’s awards program was created to highlight innovative, pioneering, and landmark construction initiatives and infrastructure projects that greatly impact the state’s economy. It also honors the businesses and organizations that work together to ensure each project’s success.

Sargent & Lundy’s work on the Cape May project commenced when Atlantic City Electric (an Exelon company) selected the firm as its engineer of choice for the substation’s complete rebuild design. The new state-of-the-art facility is designed to meet current and future energy needs and improve service reliability for more than 7,100 existing customers in Cape May, West Cape May, and Cape May Point. It also has increased capabilities to reduce the impacts of severe storms, leading to fewer storm-related outages.

The project involves a complete rebuild of a new 69kV bus, a new 69-12kV transformer, an upgraded combined control room and switchgear enclosure, and new 12kV feeders to service the load. The firm also supervised the subcontractor’s design of the building and a decorative wall to enhance the aesthetics of the substation.

Sargent & Lundy’s team has interfaced closely with Atlantic City Electric’s team to mitigate concerns and provide reliable electrical service to area residents during the project’s upgrade, permitting, and construction stages.

The next phase of construction will commence after the summer shore season, and construction is expected to be completed by May 2023.

The New Jersey Alliance for Action is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association representing thousands of business, labor, government, utility, education, professional, and other New Jersey leaders. Its mission is to improve New Jersey's economy through the promotion of environmentally friendly capital construction and infrastructure investment.

Sargent & Lundy joined the New Jersey Alliance for Action in 2020 to help support local utility clients and contribute to meeting the state’s ambitious green energy goals.
