As a pioneer in carbon capture utilization and storage projects, Sargent & Lundy will share insights gained through its work with utilities, government agencies, and technology at next week’s Carbon Capture Technology Expo in Houston. The two-day conference is one of the largest of its kind, drawing nearly 10,000 attendees to learn about the latest technologies, successes, and challenges in addressing the decarbonization of heavy industries and how the combination of CCUS and hydrogen will play a key role in the transition to creating a carbon-neutral energy supply.

Sargent & Lundy carbon capture specialists Kevin Lauzze, Greg Campbell, and Danielle Flagg will moderate and participate in panel discussions focused on carbon transport and infrastructure. They will describe taking concepts from the drawing board to reality as first-of-a-kind pilot projects.

On day one of the conference, Lauzze will chair a session on carbon transport, exploring best practices along with new methods and technologies. He will close out the session with a panel discussion featuring Campbell and other pipeline and energy specialists examining the following topics:

  • The technical aspects of retrofitting existing infrastructure for carbon capture and transport.
  • Retrofitting existing pipelines.
  • Design choices to prevent CO2
  • Strategies to reduce capital expenditures.

On day two, Flagg will lead a session on first-of-a-kind projects and the economic incentives, front-end engineering design components that lead to success, and industrial synergies between carbon capture and hydrogen production. The session will also look at utilizing enhanced oil recovery to encourage further carbon capture efforts from industrial sources, along with real-world examples from one of the largest carbon storage projects now underway in the Danish North Sea. Flagg will also moderate a panel discussion looking at the latest technologies and best practices being implemented to properly monitor, report, and verify a facility’s carbon capture storage activity.

Sargent & Lundy is an industry leader in the integration and development of carbon capture projects with more than 15 years of experience with various utilities, technology providers, and developers. Sargent & Lundy has been involved in every step of carbon capture development, beginning with the United States Department of Energy’s pilot projects to the first-of-a-kind commercial projects being built. Since 2007, the firm has provided engineering support for more than 60 carbon capture projects, including the Petra Nova CO2 capture project, which is the largest of its kind in the world.

The firm also provided engineering, procurement and construction services for the first-of-a-kind Project Enterprise pilot system in California that has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by at least 95% in a cost effective way using sustainable solvent technologies.
