Sargent & Lundy Acquires ARES Corporation’s Energy Business

Transaction positions Sargent & Lundy for substantial expansion in government services capacity

May 1, 2019 - Sargent & Lundy, one of the oldest and most experienced power engineering consulting companies in the world, announced today it has acquired ARES Corporation’s energy business, ARES Energy Services Division (ESD) effective May 1. The transaction positions Sargent & Lundy to achieve significant growth in the government services sector.

ARES ESD, an engineering solutions business focused on the nuclear sector, primarily serves the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). It has core competencies in engineering and design; facility operations, management and maintenance; project management; and safety, security and risk management, which greatly complement Sargent & Lundy’s own core competencies in comprehensive engineering, project development and implementation services, energy business consulting and environmental services for new and operating power generation assets.

DOE facilities that ARES ESD currently supports include Los Alamos National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, Hanford, Sandia National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The energy services business also provides management and operations services for the DOE National Training Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and has teamed with Parsons Corporation on a Defense Threat Reduction Agency contract to secure nuclear materials.

“Sargent & Lundy has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with ARES ESD dating back more than 10 years. Their high quality of service and deliverables, which we have seen demonstrated firsthand over the years, made them a clear fit for us as we explored opportunities to grow our government services capacity,” said Sargent & Lundy Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer Thomas R. White. “ARES ESD’s established relationship of more than 20 years with the DOE and its facilities combined with a talented workforce well positions us to expand our presence in the federal sector and increase our industry reach. Our combined capabilities provide tremendous value for both of our companies’ clients and more opportunities for our employees, in addition to bolstering Sargent & Lundy’s position as a premier technical services firm.”

Dr. Richard J. Stuart, chief executive officer for ARES Corporation, said, “ARES is very pleased to find the perfect match going forward for our energy services division. ESD brings 26 years of federal government services experience to Sargent & Lundy, and with their outstanding power industry experience, we expect significant growth for Sargent & Lundy’s government services sector in the future.”

Sargent & Lundy is pleased to welcome a team of approximately 200 highly skilled professionals who will contribute specialized expertise in government and industry requirements, a synergistic skillset for the firm’s already extensive service offering. The team, now a division of Sargent & Lundy’s government services business, is led by Sargent & Lundy Senior Vice President David M. Wright and supported by legacy ESD leaders Larry Shipley, Dr. Dan Weinacht and Kurt Westerman, each of whom holds more than 30 years of industry experience.

This is Sargent & Lundy’s first acquisition, a significant milestone in the firm’s 128-year legacy.
