Sargent & Lundy Participates in POWERGEN International 2023

Firm’s industry expertise to be represented in multiple panels and presentations discussing nuclear and decarbonization

February 9, 2023 – Sargent & Lundy is participating in several sessions at POWERGEN International 2023. The firm’s nuclear industry leadership and carbon capture strategy expertise will be highlighted in four presentations and two chaired panels. Select subject matter specialists will present key insights about current technologies, strategies, and best practices across two presentation categories: Nuclear’s Small Revolution and Environmental and Emission Controls.

POWERGEN International allows thousands energy professionals to network, attend educational sessions, and participate in discussions on the exhibit hall floor to advance the future of power generation. The conference is taking place February 21-23 in Orlando, Florida.POWERGEN International 2023 Presenters | Sargent & Lundy

Mike Marohl and Kevin Huberty will be presenting on topics within the category, Nuclear’s Small Revolution. Kevin Lauzze, Danielle Flagg, Carolyn Hillebrand, and Marc Prasse will discuss carbon capture and decarbonization strategies in the Environmental and Emission Controls category.

Marohl will present, “Using Building Information Modeling (BIM) Tools for Physical-Functional Plant Integration,” from 11:25 a.m.-11:55 a.m. EST on February 21. He will discuss:

  • A use case for an integrated functional-physical model.
  • A vision for future input and integration to operations, in which the model can act as a digital twin for procurement, erection, and operations.
  • How new nuclear facility designs must minimize requirements and demands placed on essential systems, structures, and components to reduce cost, improve schedule, and mitigate error.

Huberty will present, “Overview of a Small Modular Reactor Project,” from 10:05 a.m.-10:35 a.m. EST on February 22. The session will detail Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensing requirements and typical project timelines, including the FEED phase, detailed design, and construction. He will also discuss:

  • Small modular reactor (SMR) technologies and leading suppliers.
  • Standard plant design and the transition to site-specific design.
  • Modularization of the nuclear island.

Lauzze is a co-presenter with Eric Ping from Global Thermostat in the session, “Direct Air Capture Technology and Maximizing Carbon Negativity,” from 10:15 a.m.-10:45 a.m. EST on February 21. They will discuss:

  • An overview of direct air capture (DAC) technology and the status of developments and deployments to date.
  • A discussion on potential applications for coupling DAC technology with existing power assets to maximize carbon negativity.
  • Global Thermostat’s DAC technology and lessons learned from the pilot systems installed.

Flagg will chair two sessions on February 21. The first, “Carbon Sequestration Site Development, Permitting, Challenges, and Environmental Impacts,” will take place from 10:50 a.m.-11:55 a.m. EST. This panel will discuss the necessary steps to develop, permit, and operate a sequestration site with a focus on timelines, regional considerations, challenges, and potential environmental impacts.

The second session, “Carbon Capture Technology Implementation and Environmental Considerations,” will take place from 2:45 p.m.-3:50 p.m. EST on February 21. This panel will discuss the applicability and expected performance of carbon capture technologies, with a focus on the potential environmental considerations.

Lastly, Hillebrand and Prasse will co-present, “The Future of Net-Zero Combined Cycle Facilities,” from 1:30 p.m.-2 p.m. EST on February 22. They will discuss:

  • The current state of combined cycle plant technology development.
  • Key drivers that may impact the scale and timing of deployment.
  • The cost for various decarbonization scenarios.
