Sargent & Lundy Presenting at 22nd Annual IPEIA Conference

The International Pressure Equipment Integrity Association Conference takes place March 7-9 in Banff, Alberta, Canada

Marc Lemmons of Sargent & Lundy

February 28, 2018 - Sargent & Lundy is presenting at the International Pressure Equipment Integrity Association (IPEIA) Conference, which takes place March 7-9, in Banff, Alberta, Canada.

Marc Lemmons of Sargent & Lundy will address the Alberta government rule mandating that power generation from coal-fired sources be eliminated by 2030, with the lost capacity replaced with that from renewable and natural-gas-fired power generation. According to Alberta Energy, approximately 41% of Alberta’s installed electricity generation capacity currently derives from coal (nearly 5,700 MW). Eighteen coal-fired power generators in Alberta would be affected by this mandate. Converting these coal-fired generators to 100% natural gas is an attractive solution for base load operations or flexible operations with renewable energy.

Lemmons’ presentation, Conversion of Tangentially, Coal-fired Electric Generating Unit to 100% Natural Gas Firing, highlights a front-end engineering design (FEED) case study of converting a twin furnace, tangentially fired U.S. coal facility to 100% natural gas firing, including estimated costs. The presentation covers the approach used to assess emission impacts (NOx, CO, and CO2) on the boiler, in terms of scope and required equipment to achieve the targeted emissions. The project’s technical feasibility, including burner technologies, flue gas recirculation for NOx emission and steam temperature control, the effects of burning natural gas on boiler thermal performance, the Association of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) code requirements, and impacts on air pollution control equipment are discussed. Lessons learned from the engineering assessment will also be shared.

This presentation will be delivered at the Banff Center, on Thursday, March 8 from 3:10-3:45 p.m., in Room 301.
