Sargent & Lundy Named Finalist in Bentley Systems’ Year in Infrastructure 2019 Awards Program

Firm recognized for innovative technology and efficient collaboration in modernization of Big Bend Power Station

August 8, 2019 – Sargent & Lundy was named a finalist in the power generation category for Bentley Systems’ Year in Infrastructure 2019 Awards program.

Bentley Systems, Incorporated is the leading global provider of comprehensive software and digital twins services for advancing the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure. The annual awards program honors the extraordinary work of Bentley software users advancing infrastructure design, construction, and operations throughout the world.

Employing modern workflows, consistent best-practices, and technical excellence, Sargent & Lundy relied on Bentley’s technology to deliver an innovative design project on time and within budget for client Tampa Electric Company (TEC), an EMERA company.

In 2018, TEC initiated a modernization project for its Big Bend Power Station to convert existing coal units to an efficient gas-fired combined-cycle facility. The modernization project aims to continue providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective power to its customers while meeting growing demand. The improvements will eliminate coal consumption in generating electricity, use less water as a part of that generation process, produce less wastewater, eliminate solid waste, and reduce air emissions. The firm is providing detailed engineering, design, procurement, project management, and onsite construction management/commissioning services.

The project design team had to overcome complex onsite interfaces and limited useful land availability. Ultimately those factors required the plant to be split across a 400-foot-wide sea water canal. Multi-site online review of the project 3D BIM model allowed the distributed design team to collaborate on the solution. The firm relied on Bentley’s innovative technologies to deliver a solid design solution.

Twelve independent jury panels of distinguished industry experts selected the 54 finalists from 571 nominations submitted by more than 440 organizations in more than 60 countries. Winners will be selected and announced at Bentley’s Year in Infrastructure 2019 Conference, October 21-24 in Singapore.
